If the idea of spending a few nights nestled in a cozy mountain hut, skiing fresh powder in a stunning alpine setting, and not having to share it with anyone but your friends sounds like a good time to you, then this is your trip.

Tucked away in the mountains at the high end of a secluded valley between Gudauri and Kazbegi you will find the Village of Juta and the stunningly beautiful Chauki Range. The massif itself if composed of several summits, the highest being Asatiani at 3842 m, which together form an awe inspiring alpine skyline that is distinct to any other in the Republic of Georgia. For that reason, we chose it as the background for our company logo at Caucasus Nomad.

While this area is splendid to visit year round, our favorite time to be in Chauki is winter. It is silent and stunning in the snow. What’s more, you are unlikely to run into others as the road to Juta is blocked by avalanches and impassable by car for the duration of winter. Only a few people stay through the year to watch after their animals and livestock. This solitude only adds to the magic.

While a car won’t get you into wintertime Juta, we can still get you there on skis. From the point where snow clearance ends on the road it’s about a 4-km uphill skin to the village. Due to the high avalanche risk in the road corridor and the treacherous drop offs along the slide paths, we advise you not to attempt the approach without a professional guide.

While it’s possible to make a day tour to Juta, we recommended you stay for multiple nights during the winter. There are so many great ski touring options in the area from easy, intermediate, all the way to advanced ski mountaineering. You certainly can’t explore them all in a day. Moreover, because the approach up and down the road eats up precious daylight, the steep couloirs and open powder fields at the higher elevations just aren’t accessible in a day trip.

In order to make it possible to fully explore the Chauki region on skis, our partners have agreed to open up their cozy mountain hut on request and send in a cook and staff to support our ski touring expeditions. What this means is that you have the unique opportunity to have a private, fully-catered, remote alpine experience, to be shared amongst your fellow adventurers. You can enjoy the untouched powder by day as you admire the serenity and majesty of the surrounding peaks, relax back at the hut with a well-earned cold beer, then gaze in silent amazement at the stars in the unblemished night sky before tucking into your warm sleeping bag for a solid night’s sleep. Best of all, when you wake up you’ll have the chance to repeat it all over the next day.
